Only issued a one day free voucher

Original review Oct 15, 2019
Rented a car from Avis, new Subaru; however the battery died the next morning. My husband had a job interview so fortunately he found a ride while I stayed with the car. Their service came and jumped the car and everything was fine. Made it home, however it had another dead battery that morning and we had told them our return time was noon. Called their service dept again and they sent a tow truck that did not arrive until mid-afternoon. When it was all said and done, they charged us over $800. Called again and they charged us for not putting gas back in and could not reduce the rate under $220 for 2 days! It was only supposed to be $85! We did get one free day voucher, but still this was their vehicle! Sooooo do not like this company and how they treat a “Preferred” member!

AVIS bills me over $5,000 for a $69 car rental...what a joke!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Rented a Toyota Camry for 3 days over Labor Day weekend thru the Costco program...agreed upon price $69.74. AVIS actually charged me $5,069.69. SO OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! I wasted time yesterday on a call with AVIS pointing this out after I noticed a $5,000 pending charge on my credit card app, and was assured by the AVIS rep that it would be fixed. Today I returned the car, and a charge for $5,069.69 was actually put thru by AVIS. Have wasted a lot more time today with AVIS trying to get it resolved. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE...just AWFUL. I find it all inexcusable and disgusting.

Great but dissappointed

I rented a vehicle on Friday 27th 2019 in Washington DC at the L Street location, while in the lobby a staff member they called Joe perceeded to cuss out and threaten an elderly staff member in front of myself and two other customers. My customer experience from Marilyn was excellent, but it was very hard to watch her be disrespected by this young man.

Unhappy

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Hello,

We reserved a mini van for 3:00 pm. Arrived and were told it was on its way.

2.5 hours later the van cannot be found. The poor clerk tried everything to locate it. She called hours before to check on its arrival. A call to let us know its status would have been nice.

I started calling the customer service line and got no help. Fernando in reservations told me that “reservations do not guarantee anything” and he would be happy to cancel my reservation without a fee!!! We have reservations needing to be canceled now. They found us a smaller vehicle that we crammed in for a 20 hour one way road trip after 3 hours.

Did I tell you this is our first time using Avis? And our last. Are there any corporations our there that care about customers anymore? Avis definitely has an upper management problem which puts their counter help in a very bad position.

They are supposed to find us a van on our route.... I will be waiting for that call!

Forced to pay for a repair I did not cause

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I rented a car at the Prague airport and was asked to walk around the car and look for any scratches or dents. They said if any damage was noted during my self inspection to come back to the counter and report it before I left. I walked around the car and did not notice any dents or scratches to the car body. It never occurred to me to bend down and look closely at the tire wheel rims. Most of the time in renting cars company reps are not concerned about minor scratches and certainly I have never looked at tire rims. When I returned the car a day later I was informed that the wheel rim had scratches and that since they were not noted by me prior to taking delivery of the car I was responsible for the cost of the repairs. The cost was $259.37. Setting aside the fact that 1) I am 100% sure I did not scratch the rim of the car, 2) they were so minor that most anyone renting the car would not notice, 3) a future car buyer would shrug their shoulders as it would have no impact on the value of the car and 4) the fact that there is no way the rim would cost that much to repair, I was told I could not leave the airport unless I signed a form agreeing to pay. In effect I was forced to agree to the repairs and given no appeal rights. It was a pure money grab and I have filed a dispute with the company. The US number I called for customer service say it will take 15 days to investigate but I already can predict that the investigation will state it is my fault. I already tried appealing to the manager at Prague when I returned the car and in Prague their attitude is we are perfect and its your fault. We do not make mistakes!

One way rentals

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I made a one way rental, only to find out later that Avis, without telling me anytime during the process, changed it to a return rental to the same location. If you can't handle one way rentals, tell me while I'm trying to make the rental. Dumbest company ever. They handled my rentals one way in the past. But, can't do it now, and I'm not told that until I check my incorrect rental email. Again, dumbest company EVER, EVER!!!

Your vehicle was topped off 45 miles from the location. It was not on full. Therefore, you deserve to be charged the gas fee for the rental.

Rental contract 92874**** Arrived with late flight and took possession of the car around 11Pm without agent of Budget. The contract was without full insurance, so i gave a credit card guarantie. The car looked OK, see attached picture. On returning the car, the reception agent went straight on his knies to check for dammages under the bumper. I had the car for 4 days and sure i did not do any dammage. I was charged 200,-Euros on my credit card for repair cost. I generally use to rent a car a lot of times a year, but the way it happen looks like a set up, but can not prove it. Next rental i will avoid Budget!

Sent to a collection agency regarding a charge I had been told 3 times was waived.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I returned my retal car an hour late due to weather and a long line at returns and was told it was not a problem. I received a bill for $70 a week later and spoke to Avis and was told, again, that the fee had been waived. This happened 2 more times after which I thought that the ussue had been resolved. I then received a bill from a collection agency, which I paid. I will never rent a vehicle from Avis again.

Horrible customer service, Avis does not care.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Avis did not have the car we prepaid for. Did not offer anything comparable. Then ignored me. I then asked for a refund, in which they said it would take 5 to 7 days in order to receive it, in two different refund amounts. Even though Avis broke the contract we had. They then said, that Avis would wave the cancellation fee for us, as if they were doing us a favor. Horrible company.

Rental damage scam

AVIS Budget Group - Rental damage scam
AVIS Budget Group - Rental damage scam - Image 2

I would like to advise consumers of a scam I was involved in regarding renting vehicles from Budget Rent A Car (or any rental company) so that they have information ahead of time about what they should do to protect themselves –(1) take photos of the vehicle you are renting both at the time of pick up and at the time of return and (2) not to rent from Budget and / or Avis.

December 1 – 3, 2017 - My wife Monica Garber and I rented a van from Budget Rent A Car in Portland Oregon

January 5, 2018 - We received a letter from Viking Billing Service. It states "Viking provides claims administration services for Budget Rent A Car". It further states that the van we rented was "damaged while in your possession" for a total of $1,752.41.

January 2018 – Made several phone calls to both Viking & Budget trying to get documentation from them since we did not damage the van whatsoever.

January 30, 2018 at 1:45 pm - We received the "supporting documents" of their false claim by email.

January 30, 2018 at 5:28 pm -I responded to their email advising them that I know of their scam and fraudulent claim, with my supporting photo showing absolutely no damage whatsoever when returning the van to their lot on December 3, 2017. Also attached see their photos sent to me showing the “false” damage to a van we supposedly had rented. I received these photos and the actual Estimate of Repair after I requested those documents to be emailed to me.

January 31, 2018 - Maureen Byrd from Budget left me a voicemail stating that she had advised Viking to close their file

February 1, 2018 at 1:21 pm – received an email from Maureen Byrd confirming she had advised Viking to close their file.

February 5, 2018 I responded to their emails lettering them know of the false claim and that I was very disgusted with them.

After my emails to both Viking and Budget on January 30, 2018 it only took one day to close their claim. It is incomprehensible how they can do something this fraudulent causing consumers the kind of stress we have gone through. I was lucky enough to have the random photo taken by my wife when returning the van, but others may not be so lucky. Had I not had this photo, I’m not sure what the outcome would have been.

Budget offered me 2 days free rental, but I would never rent from them again.

I have all the documentation should anyone want to see it.

I had a similar experience with Hertz in Edinburgh Airport, we picked the car up and noticed damage to the wheel rims. when I reported it I was waived away saying the damage was noted and they had photographed the damage.

On return they immediately went down to the right front tire and said there was a small nick in the tire. I had full insurance coverage, but they said Tires and Glass are not covered. I am now out 98.80 British pounds for the tire and another 35 for 'damage processing admin fee', I was also insured through AMEX who also said they did not cover Tires!!

My brother from UK, was aware of friends in the same situation, If it looks like a SCAM and smells like a SCAM, it is a SCAM. Shame on you Hertz!!!

Avis in Buffalo NY is terrible

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Twice in a row within 3 months I rented cars on weekends from Avis in Buffalo NY and experienced really lousy service. I belong to Avis preferred which enables a member to avoid the lines to pick up a car. The first time in August 2018 ona Saturday I proceeded to the Avis Preferred Booth located where cars were parked and the booth was being remodeled. A sign said to go back upstairs to th counter. Unfortunately there was a computer outage and the lack of any accommodation for Avis Preferred customers caused me to wait in line 90 minutes and miss a family birthday party. The second incident on Nov 17 was similar. Again I proceeded to the Avis Preferred booth only to find it unoccupied. A sign directed customers to go upstairs. I waited in line 20 minutes until my turn and a nice Avis agent explained that in Buffalo Avis Preferred is closed on Weekends! So about 30 minutes after arriving at Avis I hopped into my car to learn that it smelled badly of cigarette smoke. It took nearly 30 more minutes to get another car because the very nice agent could "get access" to a car, whatever that meant. This situation reflects poorly on Avis locally and company wide. Understood, Buffalo is not a major city market but it is second largest in NY State. Avis Preferred should be staffed 7 days a week. Additionally, when making a reservation on the website one is flagged as Avis Preferred so you should be notified that Preferred service will not be available, providing you the option to choose another company. I'm going to definitely choose another company next Buffalo trip and possibly across the board. Avis quality of vehicles has gone down.

Buffalo is a terrible place. More incompetence than most with little to no accountability. Go to the corporate offices, then government agencies to complain and get fair treatment.
